Ladies and sapphics around the globe, it’s finally time for Girl Rules — one of the most anticipated GL (Girls’ Love) series releases of the year.
Often dubbed the Thai answer to The L Word, the expectations for this show have been sky-high from the moment it was announced. Fans have been seated, snacks ready, waiting to see if the comparison actually holds up.
After watching Episode 1, one thing is clear: Girl Rules wastes absolutely no time introducing us to its messy, interconnected sapphic universe.
And honestly? We’re not mad about it.

The Premise: A Deliciously Messy Sapphic Web
The story centers around six women whose lives are tangled together through friendships, work, ex-relationships and complicated feelings.
Think:
• Someone wants to date someone who wants nothing to do with them.
• Someone is still stuck on an ex while another woman is pining for them.
• And someone else might still be claiming to be “straight”…for now.
If this sounds familiar, it should. Fans of Alice’s infamous relationship web from The L Word will immediately recognize the chaotic energy.
And frankly, this messy interconnected dynamic is exactly what many GL fans have been craving.
This is a sapphic hot spring of romantic chaos — and Episode 1 dives right in.
Why This Series Already Feels Different
When it comes to Thai production houses, GMMTV is known for delivering high production quality and polished storytelling.
However, historically many Thai GL series lean toward sweet, soft romances — first love, slow-burn relationships and wholesome emotional journeys.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, some of the genre’s most beautiful stories live there.
But Girl Rules is clearly trying something different.
This series leans messier, more mature and slightly more Western in tone, exploring characters who are flawed, emotional and unapologetically bold.
Naturally, we were curious to see if GMMTV could pull off that shift.
Episode 1 suggests they just might.
What Worked in Episode 1
Finally: Mature Female Characters
The first thing that immediately stood out?
These women feel grown.
They:
swear
get angry
reject people bluntly
chase what they want
make messy emotional decisions
And honestly? It’s refreshing.
Women are often expected to be soft, polite and emotionally tidy on screen. Seeing characters who are confident, flawed and unapologetic makes the show feel far more realistic and relatable.
Women can be ambitious, messy, emotional, confident and brilliant all at once — and this series seems ready to explore that.
Prim’s Lingering Love for Her Ex
One storyline that immediately caught our attention involves Prim, who is clearly still emotionally tethered to her ex.
Not just casually thinking about her.
Stuck.
Like, truly not-over-it stuck.
We don’t often see this dynamic explored deeply in GL series, where romances tend to move forward fairly quickly. Watching someone struggle to emotionally detach from a past relationship adds a layer of authenticity that we appreciated.
Heartbreak is rarely neat.
And Girl Rules seems willing to sit in that discomfort.
The Club Scene: Where Do We Sign Up?
Quick side note.
Whatever club these characters are partying at?
Please drop the location. Immediately.
Between this spot and the iconic club in Harmony Secret, we’re ready to call a Grab and make it a sapphic nightlife tour.
Consider us officially intrigued.
Wardrobe That Actually Serves Looks
One of the biggest visual wins of Episode 1 was the wardrobe styling.
For once, the characters are dressed in outfits that actually:
fit their personalities
look fashionable
highlight their individual style
Too often, GMMTV productions have styled characters in oversized or overly simple outfits that flatten their on-screen presence. These actresses are stunning, so it’s refreshing to finally see styling that lets them serve the looks they’re clearly capable of.
Here, however, the wardrobe feels intentional and expressive. The vibrant styling adds personality and reinforces the characters’ confidence.
The fashion?A vibe.
Bold Production Design
Another pleasant surprise was the show’s use of color and visual styling.
Rather than leaning into the soft pastels that many romantic series favor, Girl Rules embraces bold, saturated color choices. Rich tones and strong contrasts give the sets and scenes a visual energy that feels both modern and striking.
There’s also a subtle throwback element in some of the styling and set design — hints of retro influence that make the overall aesthetic feel vibrant, distinctive and unexpectedly on trend.
We were skeptical when we saw the previews.
But in the actual episode?
It works.
Crossing Established Pairings
Now this may be slightly controversial among GL fans.
But we actually enjoyed seeing Namtan paired with a different actress on screen.
In many Asian fandoms, actor “ships” can become extremely strong — sometimes making it difficult for actors to work outside their established pairings.
But actors are exactly that: actors.
Watching performers explore chemistry with different co-stars can lead to unexpected and compelling dynamics.
And we’re here for that experimentation.
A quick nod here to Love, whose bold and confident character immediately makes an impression. The way she subtly pushes the moment forward at Prim’s Birthday party with that playful bit of tension works surprisingly well.
The Surprise English Dialogue
Another unexpected moment?
English dialogue.
When Namtan and Film suddenly switched to English, we were caught completely off guard.
It only happens briefly, but it’s a fun nod for international viewers. While the primary audience is Thai, those small moments feel like a wink to global fans who are watching and supporting the series from around the world.
And trust us — Inter-fans notice and appreciate it.
What We’re Still Unsure About
The Story Is Moving Fast
Episode 1 moves quickly.
Very quickly.
While that makes for an exciting start, it also raises a question: Will the pacing hold across all 12 episodes?
With multiple couples and interconnected storylines, the show has a lot to balance.
There’s always the risk that an early sprint could lead to a mid-season lull.
For now, we’re cautiously optimistic.
Split-Screen and Parallel Storytelling
Another stylistic choice we’re still evaluating is the use of parallel scenes and split storytelling.
At times, two different storylines appear to unfold simultaneously on screen.
Visually it’s interesting.
But practically?
Fans are already:
reading subtitles
following dialogue
tracking multiple characters
Adding another layer of divided attention can occasionally make it harder to fully absorb what's happening.
We’ll see if this becomes a signature strength — or something that fades as the story progresses.
Final Thoughts: A Strong Start With Room to Grow
Surprisingly, there wasn’t much in Episode 1 that we outright disliked.
Which, honestly, surprised us.
Is Girl Rules our new favorite GL yet?
Not quite.
But Episode 1 delivered a confident, entertaining and refreshingly mature start.
The characters feel complex, the production is stylish, and the romantic chaos is just beginning to unfold.
If the series continues leaning into its messy, interconnected sapphic dynamics, this could become something special.
For now, we’re officially invested.
And we’re very curious to see what kind of sapphic web this show spins next.
